It established in the Ballari district of Karnataka by the Karnataka Government under Karnataka State Universities Act 2000. The name of the university is inspired by Krishnadevaraya which was the former emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire. Two districts, Bellary and Koppal are covered by VSKUB. The university has two post-graduate campuses and affiliated with the University Grants Commission (UGC). The main campus of VSKUB is spread over about 100 acres in Jnana Sagara at Vinayaka Nagar, Bellary. Presently, it is operating 14 postgraduate departments.
